Welder: The Artisan Who Holds South Africa Together

Two welders in protective helmets welding steel in a workshop, starting a welder career

Look around any construction site, mine, refinery or harbour and you’ll see the work of a Welder. In fact, welders joined and sealed the steel frames of buildings and the pipelines that carry water and fuel. Likewise, they strengthened the pressure vessels in refineries and the ships in our harbours. If you’ve just finished matric, or you work as a general worker or assistant, welding could change your future. It’s a trade that’s respected everywhere. Artisan Training Institute (ATI) is here to help you get there.

What does a Welder do?

Welding is both a science and an art. Moreover, welders join metal using heat, pressure or both. They work with processes like MIG, TIG, Arc, flux-cored and submerged Arc welding. Furthermore, you’ll read technical drawings and learn how different metals behave. In addition, you’ll develop the steady hands and consistency to produce welds that meet precise quality standards. It’s skilled, satisfying work, and you can see the results of your craft everywhere you go.

Why train for a welder career with ATI?

When it comes to welding, the quality of your training shows in every weld. Here’s what you get with ATI:

A QCTO-accredited apprenticeship. The QCTO (Quality Council for Trades and Occupations) accredits ATI’s Welder programme. As a result, employers in every sector recognise and respect your Red Seal qualification.

Practical training from day one. From your first bead on a flat plate to your final certification weld in a challenging position, you spend real time behind the torch. Consequently, you build skill and confidence.

Trainers who weld. In fact, our trainers are experienced, qualified welders. Likewise, they bring real industry knowledge into every practical session.

A foundation for coded welding. Your training sets you up for the next step. You can become a coded welder, one of the most sought-after and best-paid specialisations in the trade.

Where your welder career can take you

In fact, qualified welders are needed right across South Africa’s economy. For example, construction needs structural welders for buildings and infrastructure. Indeed, petrochemical plants and refineries need coded welders for pipework and pressure vessels. In addition, mines employ welders for equipment maintenance and structural fabrication. Shipbuilding, automotive and rail all depend on welding skills too. Wherever your interests lie, a welding qualification opens the door.

Aim high: become a coded welder

One of the most exciting paths for qualified welders is coded welding. Coded welders hold certification to weld on pressure systems, structural elements and specialised applications to international standards such as ASME, EN or AWS. Moreover, they are among the highest-paid artisans globally. Likewise, South Africa’s oil and gas, petrochemical and energy sectors offer strong opportunities for welders at this level. With ATI, you build the foundation to get there.

Is this you?

Do you have steady hands and a good eye for detail? Is making things and taking pride in quality work important to you? Do you want a trade that’s in demand in almost every industry? It could also grow into specialised, well-paid work. If you answered yes, the Welder’s torch is waiting for you.
